Every week someone asks me whether they should build their site on WordPress, Shopify, Squarespace, or one of the newer AI-assisted builders. The honest answer is that there's no single "best" platform — there's only the platform that best fits what your business actually needs to do, how much time you have, and what your budget looks like.
WordPress suits businesses that want full control and content flexibility, like a blog or a content-heavy site. Shopify is built specifically for selling products online. Squarespace suits businesses that want a polished design they can edit themselves with minimal technical setup. AI-built websites suit businesses that need a simple, professional site fast and affordably. The right choice depends on whether you're selling products, publishing content regularly, or just need a straightforward brochure site.
What is WordPress best for?
WordPress is the right call when you want a website that can grow and change over time — a blog you update weekly, a resource library, or a site with custom functionality that off-the-shelf builders can't handle. It gives you the most control of any platform on this list, but that control comes with more moving parts to maintain (plugins, updates, hosting). If content and flexibility matter more to you than speed to launch, my WordPress CMS service is built around exactly this.
What is Shopify best for?
Shopify exists to sell products, and it shows — inventory, checkout, shipping, discount codes and payment processing all work out of the box. If you're running or launching an online store, it will save you from having to bolt e-commerce onto a platform that wasn't designed for it. It's less suited to businesses that are mostly service-based or content-driven, where you'd be paying for commerce features you never use. I cover setup and design through my Shopify websites service.
What is Squarespace best for?
Squarespace is a strong fit for business owners who want a genuinely good-looking site and the ability to edit text, images and blog posts themselves afterwards, without touching code. The trade-off is less flexibility than WordPress if your needs get complex — custom functionality, unusual layouts or advanced integrations can be harder to force through. For straightforward brochure or portfolio sites where design and easy self-editing matter most, it's a solid choice, and it's what I build through my Squarespace websites service.
What is an AI-built website, and when does it make sense?
An AI-built website uses AI tools to speed up the design and build process — generating layout options, copy drafts and structure quickly — which I then review, refine and hand-code where needed rather than shipping raw AI output. It's a genuinely good fit when you need a professional, simple site fast and on a tight budget: a small business brochure site, a landing page, or a first website for a new venture. It's not the right tool for complex e-commerce builds, heavily bespoke functionality, or sites that need deep custom development — for those, standard web development is the better path. You can see examples of this approach on my AI website design page.
Side-by-side comparison
| Platform | Best for | Typical cost | Turnaround |
|---|---|---|---|
| WordPress | Content-heavy sites, blogs, businesses that want full control | Mid-to-higher, depending on complexity — see pricing | Moderate — more setup and content structuring involved |
| Shopify | Online stores selling physical or digital products | Mid-range plus ongoing Shopify subscription fees | Moderate — product catalogue setup takes time |
| Squarespace | Design-led brochure sites you'll self-edit afterwards | Mid-range plus Squarespace subscription | Faster than WordPress for simple sites |
| AI-built website | Simple, professional sites on a tight budget or timeline | From $1,500 — see pricing | Fastest option for straightforward brochure sites |
How do I decide?
As a rough guide: if you're selling products, look at Shopify. If you want to publish content regularly and want full control, WordPress is usually the better fit. If you want a polished site you can tweak yourself without much technical fuss, Squarespace makes sense. And if you just need something professional up quickly without a big budget, an AI-built site is often the smartest starting point. See my full services page for how I can help with any of these.
